Why More People Need to Eat Walnuts

Walnuts added to a salad or just eaten plain are a nutritious treat.

To start with, walnuts taste awesome. They have so many vitamins and minerals that one can’t help but love them. Walnuts are a very high source of omega-3 fat and can protect the heart after eating a high fat meal. Walnuts are also high in phenol content especially the skin of the nut. 90% of the phenols in walnuts are in the skin, where the phenolic acids, tannins, and flavonoids are contained. The walnut skin is whitish, sometimes waxy, sometimes flaky outermost part of the shelled nut. Most people remove this skin because it has a slightly bitter taste, but it is recommended to go ahead and eat this.

Walnuts have a somewhat unusual form of vitamin E, but it’s very beneficial. Instead of the vitamin E being in it’s alpha-tocopherol form, walnuts have it in the gamma-tocopherol form. This provides better protection for the heart, especially in men.

A recent study has shown that only 5.5% of Americans eat tree nuts of any kind. That’s bad considering that people who do eat tree nuts take in 5 grams more fiber, 260 milligrams more potassium, 73 grams more calcium, 95 grams more magnesium, 3.7 milligrams more vitamin E and 157 milligrams less sodium.

There has been much research done on the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits of walnuts. Walnuts are very high in these and help protect against metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular problems and type-2 diabetes. Walnuts also contain the phytonutrient quinone jusgalone which is found nowhere else. Walnuts help guard against protstrate caner and breast cancer.
